Art in Nursing

Though nursing is often thought of as a science, it is also an art. When people usually think of art they think of paintings, sculptures, but nursing is not usually the first thing that comes to mind. This painted fan reminds me of how nursing is an art in multiple ways. First off, there are millions of fans in the world all designed for a similar purpose. Their purpose is usually to keep one cool on a hot summer’s day. This goes for nursing as well in the sense that most nurses are giving the same foundation of information in terms of what they learn in their nursing program. Though every nurse is supplied with the same foundation, every nurse is not the same. This fan is painted with its own unique design that some may think is beautiful and some may look at as simple and boring. Each and every nurse has their own style that makes them a unique and special nurse unlike any other. Whether this style is their approach when talking to patients or the way they make a patient feel heard and understood, not every nurse is the same in the way they practice despite being taught the same set of basic skills. As we grow as nurses, one’s own style and personality will shine through much like the design on this fan which is why I chose it as my example of art in nursing.

  1. This is my favorite assignment to review and your work beautifully illustrates why! The analogy between the painted fan and nursing is beautiful and right on ‘the money’. We are all unique in our own style and how we ‘give’ to our patients. Thanks for sharing; I feel honored to have read this!

  2. Great reflection. I totally agree with what you said how even though every nurse is given the same set of tools to be a nurse, not all nurses are the same. This is similar to my own post where I discuss how each nurse is different, but then I go more in the route of it takes a certain type of person to be a nurse. Overall, well done!

  3. This is a great reflection! I totally agree with what you said about how each nurse and their practice is unique and special, and not every nurse is the same. You and I mentioned similar topics – as each nurse is an individual and goes about patient care in their own unique manner, which is what makes nursing so special! We both went in different directions afterwards, as I focused on the similarity between ALL nurses, which is compassion, where you emphasized the important differences between nurses! Great job!

  4. I like how you chose a picture that was something so ordinary as a fan and were able to think about and relate back to nursing. I really liked how you talked about each fan being different just like how every nurse is different but that’s what makes it beautiful. Great job
