How I Made a Difference

How I Made a Difference

Throughout my clinical experience, I felt as though there were multiple moments I made a difference in which it could be something simple as talking with a patient who may be lonely or even just making them feel heard. One specific example that comes to mind when I think back to how I made a difference during clinical would be when I took the time to stop and listen to a patient during my rotation. While clinical is focused on working on skills learned in class and applying them to a hospital setting, I feel as though I learned a lot about communication and filling the emotional needs of patients as well. I had just grabbed the patient a drink of water when they stopped me and started asking me about my life as well as telling me about their own. While I was in the middle of doing multiple tasks, I stopped, listened, and spoke with the patient for a little as I felt they likely didn’t have many people to talk to or just tell stories to. Especially with COVID protocols restricting visitors in hospitals at this time it makes it difficult for patients to talk to loved ones. In the midst of the pandemic, if a patient is allowed to have visitors it is likely during a restricted window of time and usually limited to one family member during their whole stay in the hospital. For this reason, I feel if it is possible that one should take a little extra time to talk to their patients and check in on them because these are lonely and scary times in which I felt by doing something as simple as listening to a patient’s story could have a larger impact on their emotional health as well as make them feel heard in a busy world. While this was a simple act, I do feel as though it did make a difference for the patient since they were able to take a second to talk about something other than their condition or their treatment plan. Everyone deserves to feel heard and understood in which I felt by doing something as simple as talking and listening to the patient allowed me to make a difference without even knowing it at the time.
