Proposing Change

Since identifying the focus of our dissemination project, we have advanced forward in terms of solidifying research, establishing a method to distribute our research, as well as figuring out how to present our newfound information to our clinical floor. For this semester, we were on a Urology floor in which we made the focus of our dissemination project Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTIs). Though CAUTIs are common on all units, we figured it fit our unit especially since the focus of our unit is the urinary system. Through research we were able to discover diverse protocols when it came to reducing CAUTIs in the clinical setting. Some of these findings included the importance of educating, continuous evaluation, and quality care regarding patients with foley catheters. Following research, we were able to solidify our proposal to educate nurses on the importance of CAUTI prevention to reduce the occurrence of CAUTIs in the clinical setting.

Through this research we found, we will be able to decrease the prevalence of CAUTIs on our units through distributing knowledge and using continuous evaluation for indwelling foley catheters. The research that I believe will be most useful in future practice is the discussion of if a foley catheter is still necessary during patient rounds. If nurses, doctors, and other healthcare professionals begin to make foley catheters a daily discussion then it is likely that patient’s will not have a foley for longer than they need and therefore decrease their risk for developing a CAUTI. I hope that through what I have learned during this project that I can reduce the prevalence of CAUTIs using education and discussion among a healthcare team. Not only will this research improve future practice but also increase the quality of care delivered to each patient.

While working as a team we were able to overcome multiple challenges while collaborating as a group. Our process mainly involved dividing up assignments and reviewing the work that each other did. This allowed us to evenly distribute the workload while also improving the quality of the project. Everyone remained open to suggestions and worked to create this project proposal in an efficient manner with our highest effort applied. The only challenge we ended up facing was constructing our information in a concise manner that was effective and knowledgeable to the reader. We accomplished this goal by having each group member go through their assigned portion of the proposal and fixing wordy sentences and decreasing the number of unnecessary words and statements. Overall, I feel that we worked well together as a group to achieve a common goal and develop a project proposal for reducing the prevalence of CAUTIs.
