Presenting Change
When beginning the dissemination project for my EBP II class this year, I was not sure what to expect. Though I have done my fair share of research, I was still uncertain about my ability to complete this project. Luckily, I had an amazing group and both a helpful clinical instruction and professor to guide me during this process. In terms of choosing a topic, it came quite easily considering we were on a urology floor for clinical where 75% of the patients have had or currently have a foley catheter. After finding our topic, it was time to initiate the research portion in terms of education on foley’s to reduce the risk of CAUTI’s on our clinical floor. We found plenty of useful research including a scholarly article on the “Fight the Foley” campaign that worked to reduce the prevalence of CAUTI’s through daily huddles regarding a patient’s need to continue to have the foley catheter at that given time. Overall, a lot of the research we found was extremely useful and up to date in which we used this research to create an information flyer for the floor. This project ultimately strengthened my research skills and improved my team working abilities.
Since we put up on our posters on the floor after clinical, the feedback we received was primarily through our clinical instructor who was able to gather feedback for us. She told us that the posters were extremely informational while also being simple and straight to the point. In terms of changes that could be implemented to make the flyer clearer, we were told that number 4 on our poster should be more specific regarding where the pain or redness would occur that would indicate a potential CAUTI in a patient. Though I won’t be able to see the long-term results of our intervention, I hope that our flyers make at least one nurse more aware of the risk of CAUTI’s and how to reduce the prevalence on them on the unit.
This project not only taught me a lot regarding CAUTI’s and how to reduce the risk for them but also how to work as a team. I have had plenty of experience with teamwork, but each team is different with a different dynamic in which everyone works differently. Through all our different learning styles, we were able to collaborate to divide up the work equally and efficiently. What was even better was that everyone put in their full effort, and I believe we were successful in completing this project. After this project, I feel confident that I will be able to enter nursing practice with the ability to collaborate with multiple providers and specialties to determine the best plan of care for the patient. Also directly relating to this project, I can make employers aware of my drive to initiate quality improvement on the floor using EBP. I want them to know that if I see a problem, I will not just complain about it, but look for a possible solution in research, more specifically evidence-based practice. Overall, through this project and class I have learned a significant amount of knowledge regarding research and quality improvement that I believe will help me throughout my future nursing practice.

Abigail, your group’s proposal in regard to CAUTIs captured the clinical problem clearly and how it can potentially lead to poor outcomes. The aim and method of your project was clear and relevant in what you and your group wanted to accomplish due to a common negative outcome. To wrap up your research and to make it more accessible in the clinical setting your group created an infographic that was informative, easy to understand and follow, and captured the true importance of recognizing the need for catheters; whether or not foley care has been carried out; how a catheter should be placed; ways to assess for infection; and to make sure to advocate for the patient by determining if they still need the catheter or not. You and your group did an amazing job! 🙂
Great job on this project! Hospital acquired infections is such an important topic to discuss and to educate the staff about. You and your group did such a good job at taking the most important aspects of how to prevent CAUTIs and putting it on an eye catching and easy to read poster. The importance of teamwork is necessary in the healthcare setting, and I enjoyed how you talked about this in your presenting change post.
