Career Development

By watching Nurses: If Florence Could See Us Now, I was able to hear the stories of multiple nurses in different fields of nursing. Each nurse not only discussed what their job entailed but stories that have stuck with them and given them more of a passion for their work over the years. Some of the key skills that the nurses exemplified in the film included the ability to provide care and compassion to each and every patient without judgement. So far in my nursing education I feel as if I have provided all my patients with the same care and compassion despite any personal or opposing beliefs. As I grow in my nursing profession, I only hope that I can continue to do that and continue to improve all my patient interactions. In the film, I was also introduced to fields of nursing that I had never heard of or had any experience with. One example that stood out the most to me was the nurses who worked in the Navajo Nation. This area is populated by Native American tribes and most if not all the nurses had to drive through sand, mud, and miles of desert to see their patients. This introduced me to an area of nursing that I have never had experience with and honestly had never crossed my mind prior to watching this film. Seeing these nurses in action showed me how nurses dedicate so much of their time and energy to their patients despite where they live or their own personal beliefs and values. Though a barrier for these nurses was distance and road conditions, they still did everything in their power to get to their patients and deliver high quality care in which this gave me a new type of respect for the nurses and the time and energy they put toward their practice and patients.

While the Nurses film gave me more inspiration and drive to become the best nurse I can be, the information from Maine Health and Career Services taught me how to begin working towards that goal. When preparing for my interview, I now know the importance of reviewing potential questions as well as being knowledgeable about the employer interviewing me.  By researching the employer, this can encourage me to develop questions on my own regarding their values and goals as an institution. It is also important that I develop questions regarding qualities that I desire in a job to ensure that if I choose to accept a position with this employer that I am satisfied and happy with the institution I will be working for. One thing that I will be sure to review prior to any interview is my strengths and my weaknesses. In terms of strengths, I see myself as a hard worker who is extremely passionate in working with children. Some evidence that supports that is my experience working with children throughout my lifetime. Not only did I work at a daycare with infants for over 2 years, but I also worked at a girl’s summer camp as a CNA in 2021. Both experiences only confirmed my passion for working with kids in which I feel that passion for kids or any population is an important strength to have as a future nurse. In terms of weaknesses, I have a hard time accepting failure. Though throughout nursing school I have learned that failure is not a dead end but rather a learning and growing experience. I have learned to take mistakes with a grain of salt and learn from them rather than sulk about the current outcome. This weakness has also encouraged me to be more confident in asking questions to reduce the chance of a mistake occurring in the clinical setting. Overall, I feel that after reviewing the information provided by career services as well as viewing the film Nurses that I have what it takes to become a nurse and improve all the skills I have attained throughout nursing school in future practice.
