Pre-Interview Reflection

Pre-Interview Reflection

Throughout one’s life, we encounter multiple leaders whether they be formal or informal. For some it may be a teacher, manager, or a coworker, in which they have a way of influencing decisions and providing guidance that carries with us throughout our lives. For me, one of the biggest leaders in nursing school has been my mother. My mom has been a Labor and Delivery Nurse for over 20 years and even periodically has been the charge nurse at some of her previous jobs. While she does not work as the charge nurse anymore, she continues to lead others at work with her positive attitude and years of experience in the field. Growing up I always remember hearing stories about her job as a Labor and Delivery Nurse in which I always thought it was so cool that she got to deliver babies for a job. Of course, at the time I was unaware of the difficulty of the job itself though I always remember looking up to her not only as my mom but as the amazing nurse she is. Not only was she great at communicating with her patients but also her fellow coworkers on a day-to-day basis. Especially now since I’ve been a student, she’s talked about her experience working with nursing students on her unit in which she, much like many other nurses, have begun leading the next generation of students into the field of nursing.  Since she is no longer a charge nurse, I would consider her an informal leader among her coworkers as well as when she has nursing students assigned to her. The primary difference between a formal and informal leader is how the leader is seen in an occupational role. A formal leader might be a manager or charge nurse while an informal leader simply leads others through their actions and leadership qualities. In this case, my mom would be considered an informal leader since she has not been a charge nurse in quite some time, however, from this interview I am hoping to learn more about her role as a charge nurse in the past and how she continues to use what she learned then in practice now.

  1. Fantastic Abby! What a special thing to be able to interview your Mother in your senior year of nursing school. I look forward to hearing what you learn.
